Camuy
"La Ciudad Romántica" (The Romantic City)
Camuy, (The Romantic City) was founded in 1807 by Petrolina Matos, the town is located in northwestern coastal region of Puerto Rico, next to the town of Hatillo, in the district of Arecibo. The name "Camuy' comes from the Taino language, (the original native inhabitants of the island). There have been many debates what this word (Camuy) means. Some say "Camuy" is the word used by the Tainos for the "Sun", others say that it means "beautiful scenery", some say it is a name the Tainos gave the river, others say that it was the name of a Taino chief. After checking the dictionary of the Taino language, the word Camuy does not show up, so I tend to believe that the word comes from the name of a Taino chief. According to the legend/history, there was a Taino chief in Camuy called Yumac, the name of the town of Camuy comes from spelling his name backwards or maybe the river got it's name this way and the town adapted the name of the river. Click here to see the Taino Dictionary. Actually the word I found in the Taino Dictionary for "Sun" was "Guey". Anyway, due to the legend that the word "Camuy" means "Sun" in the Taino language, the coat of arms of "Camuy" bears a image of the "Sun".
The patron saint of Camuy is San Jose. In the month of May the Patron Saint Festivities are celebrated each year with live music in the town's square.
